Supplies:

  • 2 oz worsted weight yarn in 7 colors – colors are written as Color 1, Color 2, Color 3, Color 4, Color 5, Color 6 and TIC (Tie in Color) The TIC will be your border color. (the black in the pictured apron)
  • Size “H” (4.5 mm) crochet hook
  • Needle for weaving in ends

Special Stitches:
Front Post Double Crochet (Fpdc) – YO, insert hook from front to back around post of indicated st, pull up a loop, (yo and pull through 2 loops on hook) twice.
Back Post Double Crochet (Bpdc) – YO, insert hook from back to front around post of indicated st, pull up a loop, (yo and pull through 2 loops on hook) twice.
X-stitch (x-st) - sk 1 dc, dc in next dc, working behind dc just made dc in skipped dc)
Long Double Crochet (Ldc) - yo, insert hook in st two rows below current row, working around ch-1 sp, pull up a loop to the height of the current row, complete as regular dc.

Size Info:
This pattern is written for a standard sized apron with customization options for the length of the Waist Ties.

Small Square (Make 3 using colors 1, 2 and 3)
Rnd 1 – With any color other than TIC, ch 5, sl st to form ring, ch 1, 12 sc in ring, join with sl st to first 1st sc. 
–(12 sc)-

**NOTE: Do NOT join rnds. Mark first stitch of each rnd and move marker up as you go. This will prevent a seam line from appearing in the middle of your square. Following Rnds worked in BACK LOOPS ONLY.

Rnd 2 – Ch 1, in BLO sc in same st, *3 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc, repeat from * twice, 3 sc in next sc, sc in next sc.  –(20 sc)-

Rnd 3 – Sc in next 2 sc, *3 sc in next sc, sc in next 4 sc, repeat from * twice, 3 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc.  –(28 sc)-

Rnd 4 – Sc in next 3 sc, *3 sc in next sc, sc in next 6 sc, repeat from * twice, 3 sc in next sc, sc in next 3 sc.  –(36 sc)-

Rnd 5 – Sc in next 4 sc, *3 sc in next sc, sc in next 8 sc, repeat from * twice, 3 sc in next sc, sc in next 4 sc.  –(44 sc)-

Rnd 6 – Sc in next 5 sc, *3 sc in next sc, sc in next 10 sc, repeat from * twice, 3 sc in next sc, sc in next 5 sc.  –(52 sc)-

Rnd 7 – Sc in next 6 sc, *3 sc in next sc, sc in next 12 sc, repeat from * twice, 3 sc in next sc, sc in next 6 sc.  –(60 sc)-

Rnd 8 – Sc in next 7 sc, *3 sc in next sc, sc in next 14 sc, repeat from * twice, 3 sc in next sc, sc in next 7 sc.  –(68 sc)-

Rnd 9 – Sc in next 8 sc, *3 sc in next sc, sc in next 16 sc, repeat from * twice, 3 sc in next sc, sc in next 8 sc.  –(76 sc)-

Rnd 10 – Sc in next 9 sc, *3 sc in next sc, sc in next 18 sc, repeat from * twice, 3 sc in next sc, sc in next 9 sc.  –(84 sc)-

Switch to TIC now.

Rnd 11 – Sc in next 10 sc, *3  sc in next sc, sc in next 20 sc, repeat from * twice, 3 sc in next sc, sc in next 10 sc, join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off.  –(92 sc)-

Joining (join 3 squares together in a strip)
Attach TIC with sl st in corner of square, ch 1, with right side facing of second square, insert hook from back to front in corner st of second square and complete as regular sl st, *ch 1, sl st in next st on first square, ch 1, sl st in next st on second square, repeat from * to end. Fasten off.

Rectangle Square (Make 1 using color 4)
Row 1 – Ch 74, dc in 2nd ch from hook, sk next ch, dc in next ch, working behind dc just made, dc in skipped ch (x-stitch made), *hdc in next ch, x-stitch over next 2 ch’s, repeat from * across to last ch, dc in last ch.  –(24 x-sts/23 hdc/2 dc)-

Row 2 – Ch 2, turn, dc in same st, x-stitch over next x-stitch, *ch 1, x-stitch over next x-stitch, repeat from * across to last dc, dc in last dc.  –(24 x-sts/23 ch-1 sps/2 dc)-

Row 3 – Ch 2, turn, dc in same st, x-stitch over next x-st, yo, insert hook in next hdc from row 1, working around ch-1 sp, pull up a loop to the height of the current row, complete as regular dc (Ldc made), x-stitch over next x-stitch, *Ldc over next ch-1 sp, x-stitch over next x-stitch, repeat from * across to last dc, dc in last dc.  –(24 x-sts/23 Ldc’s/2 dc)-

Rows 4-29 – Repeat Rows 2-3 13 times. Fasten off.

Trim – Join TIC in any corner with sl st, ch 1, 3 sc in corner. Work 68 sc’s evenly along each long side and 44 sc along each short side with 3 sc’s in each corner. Join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off.

 

Joining (join small squares strip to Rectangle Square – see diagram below)
Attach TIC with sl st in corner of square, ch 1, with right side facing of second square, insert hook from back to front in corner st of second square and complete as regular sl st, *ch 1, sl st in next st on first square, ch 1, sl st in next st on second square, repeat from * to end. Fasten off.

Apron Border
Row 1 – With Right Side facing and working down along side of apron, attach Color 5 with sl st to upper left hand corner, Ch 1, sc in same st, (ch 3, sc in next sc) to bottom corner, sc, ch 3, sc in corner, (ch 3, sc in next st) along bottom of apron to next corner, sc, ch 3, sc in corner, (ch 3, sc in next sc) to upper right hand corner. 

Row 2 – Ch 3, turn, sc in next ch-3 loop, ch 3, sc in same ch-3 loop, *ch 3, sc in next ch-3 loop, ch 3, sc in same ch-3 loop, repeat from * around.

Row 3 – Turn, sl st into ch-3 loop, ch 1, sc in same loop, *ch 3, sc in next ch-3 loop, repeat from * around working sc, ch 3, sc in each corner ch-3 loop, ch 3, sc in last sc.

Rows 4-X – Repeat Row 3 until Border measures 4” wide. Fasten off.

Border Trim
Row 1 – With Right Side facing and working down along side of apron, attach TIC with sl st to first ch-3 loop, ch 1, 3 sc in same loop, 3 sc in each loop around. Fasten off.

Waist Tie
Row 1 – With Color 6, ch 3, hdc in 2nd ch from hook and in next ch, ch 2, turn. 
–(2 hdc)-

Row 2 (mark as Right Side) – 2 hdc in first hdc, hdc in next hdc, ch 2, turn. 
–(3 hdc)-

Row 3 – Hdc in next 2 hdc, 2 hdc in last hdc, ch 2, turn.  –(4 hdc)-

Row 4 – 2 hdc in first hdc, hdc in next 3 hdc, ch 2, turn.  –(5 hdc)-

Row 5 – Hdc in next 4 hdc, 2 hdc in next hdc, ch 2, turn.  –(6 hdc)-

Row 6 – 2 hdc in first hdc, hdc in next 5 hdc, ch 2, turn.  –(7 hdc)-

Row 7 – Hdc in next 6 hdc, 2 hdc in next hdc, ch 2, turn.  –(8 hdc)-

Rows 8-X – Hdc in each hdc across, ch 2, turn.  –(8 hdc)-
Repeat Row 8-X until piece measures 36”. End on Wrong Side

Customization Option: Here you may customize the length of the Waist Tie. Repeat Row 8-X until Tie measures desired length.

Row X+1 – YO, insert hook in first hdc, YO, pull through st, insert hook in next hdc, YO, pull through st, YO and pull through all 4 loops on hook, (hdc dec made) hdc in next 6 hdc, ch 2, turn.  –(7 hdc)-

Row X+2 – Hdc in next 5 hdc, hdc dec over next 2 hdc, ch 2, turn.  –(6 hdc)-

Row X+3 – Hdc dec over next 2 hdc, hdc in next 4 hdc, ch 2, turn.  –(5 hdc)-

Row X+4 – Hdc in next 3 hdc, hdc dec over next 2 hdc, ch 2, turn.  –(4 hdc)-

Row X+5 – Hdc dec over next 2 hdc, hdc in next 2 hdc, ch 2, turn.  –(3 hdc)-

Row X+6 – Hdc in next hdc, hdc dec over next 2 hdc. Fasten off.  –(2 hdc)-

Waist Tie Trim
Attach TIC in tip of Waist Tie, ch 1, 3 sc in same st (point of tie made), sc in each side of rows to other tip of Waist Tie, 3 sc in point, sc in each side of row back along Tie, join with sl st to first sc.  Fasten off.

Joining Waist Tie to Apron
Place Waist tie so center of apron meets with center of tie, pin in place.  Matching up stitches, join yarn with sl st to edge of apron (see Fig 2 for aid) and join in the same method the squares were joined. Fasten off.
